Xenophon’s Cyropaedia has been extensively featured throughout Leo Strauss’ philosophical publications, and Cyrus the Great became a common place in his writing, although the German philosopher resorted to the same common clichés and topics: Cyrus was an Eastern tyrant who, by creating an empire in which his subjects were slaves of the Great King, had thwarted the original idea of Persian republicanism.
