Specifying the links between sport, body and gender allows us to understand how the supremacy of the “masculine” over the “feminine” operates and is maintained in the field of sport. Body and sporting norms ensure a gendered hierarchy and make sport a magnifying mirror of the gender inequalities present in all spheres of social life. Whether competitive or not, professional or amateur, physical and sporting practices bring to light symbolic and economic power relations that are largely unfavorable to women based on limiting and essentialized representations.
