Le film Dawn, réalisé en 1928 par le cinéaste anglais Herbert Wilcox, est une représentation fictionnelle, sur un mode quasi documentaire, de l’histoire de l’infirmière Edith Cavell fusillée par les Allemands en Belgique en 1915. L’analyse de sa réception en France, à travers diverses sources (journaux, revues de cinéma, documents diplomatiques…), permet de comprendre les tensions nationalistes qui perdurent malgré le projet politique de la nouvelle intégration de l’Allemagne dans le concert des nations européennes. Cette analyse montre aussi à quel point cette forme d’expression qu’est le film constitue un enjeu culturel et politique important durant l’entre-deux-guerres.

The film Dawn, directed in 1928 by English filmmaker Herbert Wilcox, is a fictional representation, in a quasi-documentary mode, of the story of nurse Edith Cavell who was shot by the Germans in Belgium in 1915. The analysis of its reception in France, through various sources (newspapers, film magazines, diplomatic documents…), makes it possible to understand the nationalist tensions that persist despite the political project of Germany’s new integration into the community of European nations. This analysis also shows to what extent this form of expression, film, is an important cultural and political issue during the interwar period.
