The English Constitution (1867), ouvrage phare de Walter Bagehot (1826-1877), peut-il être considéré comme un miroir aux princes ? À première vue, il n’entre pas dans la catégorie des manuels d’éducation destinés aux princes du Moyen Âge puisqu’il fut rédigé par son auteur pour éclairer les Victoriens du milieu du siècle sur l’organisation de leur Constitution non codifiée. The English Constitution n’était pas non plus un recueil de préceptes moraux permettant au souverain de gouverner avec vertu. Cependant, à bien y regarder, en particulier sur un temps long, cet ouvrage prend un sens nouveau pour l’éducation des monarques britanniques puisqu’il devint l’ouvrage essentiel utilisé pour les éduquer à leur rôle de monarque constitutionnel dès la fin du xixe siècle. À terme, il s’agit bien de montrer que The English Constitution est devenu un miroir aux princes avec le temps, comme la réalisation improbable d’une projection de la pensée de son auteur.

Can The English Constitution (1867), the seminal work by Walter Bagehot (1826-1877), be considered as a Mirror for princes? At first glance, it does not fall into the category of educational manuals for medieval princes since it was written by its author to enlighten the Victorians of the mid-century on the organization of their uncodified Constitution. Nor was The English Constitution a collection of moral precepts for the sovereign to govern according to virtue. However, on closer inspection, especially over a long period of time, it has taken on a new meaning for the education of British monarchs as it has become the essential work used to educate them in their constitutional role since the end of the nineteenth century. The object of this article is to show that The English Constitution has become a Mirror for princes over time, as the unlikely realization of a projection of its author’s thought.
