From SARS-CoV-2 to a social virus in Latin America

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2022. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : The COVID-19 pandemic has spread widely in Latin American countries. The virus takes a particular toll on countries that are already “sick” in terms of income inequality, insufficient health spending, unequal access to care—dependent on income level—, and, finally, the inconsistent, even confused policies decided by the authorities to fight the pandemic. The extent of the economic crisis is conducive to the development of inequalities, poverty, and new forms of state domination. However, if the crisis lasts, impoverishing the middle classes so that more of the population join the existing poor, as is likely to happen in Latin America, the state will appear increasingly incapable of providing solutions, and blame it on the social cost.
