L’Union Européenne participe à l’action collective patrimoniale, particulièrement par l’intermédiaire des programmes Interreg : comment peut-on interpréter cette entrée de l’UE dans un champ culturel fortement prisé dans la construction des Etats-nations ? Le patrimoine se présentant comme une construction symbolique à géométrie variable, la production patrimoniale transfrontalière peut être lue comme un moyen pour l’UE – faute de pouvoir offrir un grand récit géostratégique de légitimation de son autorité politique –, de se forger une identité culturelle de type « mosaïque merveilleuse ». Elle favoriserait ainsi des identités régionalisées partagées et un « bon voisinage ».

Cultural heritage, implementing the EU legitimizing strategy. The Interreg Program as an example Today, the EU is involved in the heritage area, particularly through the Interreg Programmes : how can we interpret the EU’s investment in the cultural field which is intrinsically linked to the nation-building process? Cross-border heritage production can be analysed as a way for the EU to forge a European cultural identity based on a “wonderful mosaic” pattern, given its inability to create a substantial geostrategic narrative to legitimise its political authority. The EU would thus favour shared regionalised identities and encourage mutual understanding.
