After the nature: An ontological turn to the living in social sciences and its political implications

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2023. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : What happens if we take the concept of “the living” seriously in the realm of politics? Breaking away from the traditional ontology that distinguishes between nature and culture, this article explores the transformative potential that arises from the turn to the politics of the living. It aims to achieve two objectives: first, to identify the primary conceptual elements and debates within the field of research on the living, and second, to highlight the significance of considering the living as a subject and/or political object within contemporary critical thought. To establish the living as a political object, we begin by acknowledging the necessity of recognizing a hybrid reality. In this reality, the agency granted to a multitude of beings empowers them to create territories in a space (lieu) where interspecies social life emerges and organizes. We engage in three debates by drawing upon works that exemplify the “art of observing” alliances between humans and non human entities, often in unexpected locations. By employing this approach, we can contemplate what lies beyond the limitations of nature. We explore the relationship between humans and the living through three distinct models: subtraction, which challenges the prevailing domination of nature; legation, where humans collaborate with other living beings to shape their actions and territories; and coexistence, which takes into account the lessons of modern history and strives to prevent the recurrence of tragic events by establishing sanctuaries for the living. We conclude this ontological discussion by questioning the role of science, particularly its capacity to forge new mediations and by identifying emancipatory struggles that advocate for politics of the living that transcend the notion of nature.
