Economics and history: The alliance between Turgot and Condorcet to innovate and reform France in the eighteenth century

In the long history of economic life, there have been periods that have remained in the collective memory as examples of a desire for reform and adaptation to new times. In this article, we look back at one of those exceptional moments, when Turgot (1727–1781) and Condorcet (1743–1794), both political economists, worked together closely to reform France, develop its territory, free up trade, promote commerce, and establish justice for the productive sector embodied by the peasants. This reformist ambition was particularly well suited to a proactive policy of innovation and change. Some economists today claim that Condorcet was the creator of a genuine theory of innovation.JEL codes:
