Les auteures constatent, dans la littérature et dans la clinique, l’émergence des césariennes sur demande maternelle sans indication médicale pour une première naissance. Elles proposent, à partir du référentiel psychanalytique, de s’interroger sur les désirs et les défenses qui sous-tendent une telle demande et d’articuler la question de l’enfantement à celle du féminin. Elles rendent compte du cheminement qui les a conduites à poser la problématique suivante : l’évitement de la dimension sexuelle de l’accouchement est-il à l’origine de la demande de certaines femmes d’accoucher par césarienne ?

The authors of this article have noticed that, both in medical literature as in clinical practice, there are increasing numbers of non-essential C-sections being performed at the mother’s request for the birth of a first baby. They adopt a psychoanalytical stance as a means of exploring the desires and defence mechanisms at play in motivating such demands, and they articulate the question of giving birth with that of being a woman. They offer a description of the processes which have led them to speculate on the following question – does the desire to avoid the sexual dimension of giving birth lie at the origin of a request on the part of some women to give birth via a C-section?
