On estime généralement que, dès la fin des années 1960, un W. R. Bion intellectuellement « moins rigoureux », voire tout à fait hermétique, se fait jour, mettant soudain en cause l’approche scientiste qui avait jusque-là fermement guidé ses hypothèses. Rappelant l’interdit kantien de l’accès à la chose en soi, cet article essaie de montrer que, aux antipodes d’un mouvement de rupture idéologique ou d’appauvrissement théorique, l’introduction par Bion d’une approche dite « mystique » à cette époque ne fait que de nous conduire au point exact où, au bout d’un long parcours de recherches, sa réflexion épistémologique le mène. Sous l’apparence d’un retournement vertigineux, l’œuvre de Bion resterait en effet tout entière traversée par un unique fil rouge : le problème de la connaissance en général, et – dans la continuité de Freud – le problème de la connaissance de l’inconscient en particulier. Car affirmer la possibilité de la psychanalyse, c’est aussi démontrer, dans la théorie et dans la pratique, la façon dont le matériel inconscient, par définition inaccessible, acquiert son interprétabilité au sein de la relation analytique.

One generally considers that, beginning in the late 1960s, a “less (intellectually) rigorous” and even utterly hermetic W.R. Bion emerges, suddenly undermining the scientific approach that had guided his hypotheses up until then. By evoking the Kantian interdiction of access to the thing-in-itself, the present article attempts to show that instead of an ideological split or a theoretical recession, Bion’s introduction of his so-called “mystical” approach brings us closer to the duly thought-out conclusions of his epistemological research. Seemingly a dizzying turnaround, the current reading maintains that the common thread running through Bion’s works is that of the question of knowledge in general, and following in Freud’s footsteps, the question of knowledge of the unconscious in particular. Asserting the possibility of psychoanalysis also implies showing the way, both in theory and in practice, in which unconscious material – by definition inaccessible – acquires its interpretability through the analytical relationship.
