Our empirical setting is the coastal village of El Zonte in El Salvador, where the cryptocurrency was introduced by an evangelical organization in mid-2019. Contrary to the ideology of Bitcoin, which posits that trust in the algorithm can replace trust in a third party, the results of our study show that trust in this currency remains socially constructed.
