Divide and Rule. Geopolitics of Administrative Boundaries and State-Building in Cameroon (West Region)

This study examines the construction of the State through territorial organization. It seeks to understand how the State in Cameroon deploys itself by creating administrative units through territorial division. In so doing, the State does not only divide, but also marks its presence on its territory. It also establishes disciplinary structures that ensure the security and regulation of the flow of people from one administrative district to another. We need to understand that this territorial mesh is not absolute, however, as the boundaries of administrative districts and traditional command units continually overlap. It also appears that the desire to control the territory is influenced by social dynamics and cultural constraints.
