A comparative study of managerial incentives for achieving economic and operational objectives in nine companies in western France was conducted. Monetary and non-monetary rewards and their perception by managers are analyzed based on thirty-seven interviews. It is shown that practical incentive schemes for managers are often collective, not very discriminating, and based more on efforts and behaviors than on results. The role of individual and variable remuneration based on the achievement of objectives in the extrinsic motivation of middle managers therefore seems limited.
