Cet éditorial expose les motivations, contextuelles et théoriques, à l’origine de ce numéro thématique de la revue Entreprises et Histoire sur les organisations du nucléaire civil. Il s’agit de prendre acte de la relance inédite de l’industrie nucléaire civile, pour en analyser les causes et les effets, en portant une attention toute particulière à la dimension organisationnelle. Présentant les principaux (et nombreux) travaux menés sur le nucléaire civil depuis les années 1980, nous montrons que l’étude des organisations et des processus organisés a pour partie été délaissée par les chercheurs au profit notamment d’approches plus STS. Or les défis majeurs auxquels nos sociétés font face (lutte contre le changement climatique, décarbonation, souveraineté) et les réponses que peut (ou non) y apporter l’industrie nucléaire sont le fruit, en même temps qu’elles produisent, des transformations organisationnelles majeures qui méritent d’être étudiées, en croisant différentes échelles temporelles et spatiales.

This editorial explains the motivations, both contextual and theoretical, behind the publication by the journal Entreprises et Histoire of this thematic issue on civil nuclear organizations. The objective is to recognize the unprecedented revival of the industry and to analyze its causes and effects, paying particular attention to the organizational dimension. Reviewing the large volume of research carried out on the civil nuclear industry since the 1980s, we highlight how the study of organizations and organized processes has, in part, been neglected by researchers in favor of an approach biased towards science, technology and society (STS). Nowadays the major challenges facing our societies include the fight against climate change, decarbonization, and sovereignty, and the nuclear industry may, or may not, be able to provide the necessary responses. The key to understanding the potential for the industry to respond appropriately lies in further research of major organizational transformations and such research needs to be conducted across different time periods and different geographic locations.
