The author questions the repeated quest, in culture and in psychoanalysis, for a definition of the essence of the Masculine, while clinical practice demonstrates the extraordinary variety of its modalities both in history and on the various continents. This quest is all the more astonishing since Freud himself affirmed and explained its impossibility. The author also addresses the Lacanian attempt and the numerous misunderstandings to which his schema of sexuation lends itself. He concludes with the clinical misinterpretation that consists of helping the subject to identify and take note of his singularity while offering him a “psychoanalytic” ideal of masculinity.

L’auteur questionne la quête répétée, dans la culture et en psychanalyse, d’une définition de l’essence du Masculin, alors que la clinique démontre l’extraordinaire variété de ses modalités dans l’histoire et dans les divers continents. Cette quête est d’autant plus étonnante que Freud lui-même en a affirmé et expliqué l’impossibilité. L’auteur aborde aussi la tentative lacanienne, les nombreux malentendus auxquels prête son schéma de la sexuation. Il conclut sur l’aberration clinique qui consiste à aider le sujet à repérer et à prendre acte de sa singularité tout en lui proposant un idéal « psychanalytique » de masculinité.
