Since the 2000s, Gulf countries have developed their artistic and cultural scenes as instruments of soft power, integrating art and culture into their communication strategies and the construction of a national narrative. In Bahrain, this process has fostered the emergence of a dynamic and multi-scalar artistic landscape, where various actors—cultural institutions, private galleries, and artist-run spaces—contribute to the evolution and diversification of the sector. This article explores the dynamics of Bahrain’s artistic field by highlighting the interactions and forms of collaboration, as well as the tensions, interdependencies, and forms of resistance that shape it. Based on fieldwork conducted between 2018 and 2022, it examines the role of cultural institutions, private galleries, and artist-run spaces, shedding light on the strategies adopted by artists to navigate between institutional support, the pursuit of visibility, and aspirations for greater autonomy.

Depuis les années 2000, les pays du Golfe ont développé leurs scènes artistiques et culturelles comme outil de soft power, intégrant l’art et la culture dans leurs stratégies de communication et de construction de récit national. À Bahreïn, ce processus a favorisé l’émergence d’un paysage artistique dynamique et multiscalaire, où divers acteurs – institutions culturelles, galeries privées et artist-run spaces – participent à l’évolution et à la diversification du secteur. Cet article explore les dynamiques du champ artistique bahreïni en présentant les interactions et les formes de collaboration, ainsi que les tensions, interdépendances et formes de résistance qui le traversent. Basé sur une enquête de terrain menée entre 2018 et 2022, il examine le rôle des institutions culturelles, des galeries privées et des artist-run spaces, révélant ainsi les stratégies adoptées par les artistes pour naviguer entre soutien institutionnel, recherche de visibilité et aspirations à une plus grande autonomie.
