In the 1970s, Ignacy Sachs promoted the notion of ecodevelopment as a third way between infinite economic expansion and no-growth policies. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, The Centre international de recherche sur l’environnement et le développement (Cired), founded by I. Sachs in 1973, organized an international symposium in Paris on March 30-31, 2023, to discuss the future of ecodevelopment, and more broadly the environment-development nexus in the 21st century. This article reviews the main take-aways of that symposium, around four main topics: (i) the implementation of environmental policies; (ii) the short-run/long-run combination; (iii) the North-South cooperation; and (iv) the redefinition of needs and well-being via the concepts of capability and sufficiency.
