Citizen participation, political activism and public debate in Latin America

The article analyzes three major changes in Latin American organization and representation of interests that have occurred as a result of various crises in the trade unions and political parties. The first transformation concerns the growing consolidation of a civil society and NGOs as one of the major actors in the region. The second change is related to the exhaustion of a profile of political activism and the advent of new pragmatic modalities of citizen involvement. Finally, the article analyzes the main mutations produced in the media and the cultural industries and their consequences in the representation of the public and the social debates.
