Since the September 11 attacks, many peace groups around the world have used the Internet to disseminate information and seek solutions to conflict. This article examines the emergence of these groups and offers some preliminary thoughts on both their potential and their limitations. It uses two examples of pre-Internet movements (the Japanese anti-Vietnam war group Beheiren and the women of Greenham Common in the UK) to explore the relationship between communications media and the repertoires of contention developed by pacifist movements. It then goes on to look at a number of current peace groups, and considers how their repertoires of contention are evolving in a context defined by the spread of new media and the shift from “world war” to “global war.”
