In the service of the Counts of Mortain (late 11th-mid 12th century)
Type de matériel :
92
The County of Mortain emerged in the mid-11th century on the western border of the Duchy of Normandy. The existence of a centre of power around a fortress, several religious establishments and a significant estate presupposes the presence of a garrison, a court, clerks, intendants, servants… Officers of the Count of Mortain - viscount, provost, pincerna, camerarius – surface in the documentation from the end of the 11th century. Next to these men, chaplains and canons of the collegiate church played a significant role alongside the Counts of Mortain, helping to administer and manage the Avranchin area.
