In 1926, Action Française was condemned by Pope Pius XI, which marked a turning point for the nationalist league and for the political action of French Catholics. In Seine-Inférieure, owing to the proximity of the archbishop of Rouen, André du Bois de La Villerabel, to the monarchist league, the repercussions of this decision were striking. During the 1920s, the league reached its political and cultural peak in conservative and Catholic circles. However, the papal intervention significantly altered the relationship between the clergy, their followers, and the Maurrassian supporters of the league in a department still marked by political Catholicism. The pontifical condemnation was slow to take hold, and the contradictory reactions it provoked had long-term consequences on Action Française followers in Seine-Inférieure.
