For a long time, historiography has seen the maternal uncle as a special figure in medieval kinship. The frequency of avuncular relationships in literary sources is particularly striking. However, few studies have been carried out using other types of sources. After a review of the historiography, this article, using several documentary sources, shows different realities of the avuncular relationship. In these, this kinship is not a structural element of the individuals’ lives. Neither solely positive, nor featuring as much as it does in literary sources, nor the sole and preferential axis of close kinship, its importance seems to lie in the field of practical kinship.
