Where do the Rules Lie?

The A. examines the recent debate about the nature of rulefollowing – as famously opened by S. Kripke – and tries to reformulate it : the point is not about founding, conceiving or explaining rules, nor is it to discuss various conceptions of the rule, or right and wrong applications of rules. It is to look for it « inthe right place »(as C. Diamond says). We should not, then, overestimate the importance of rules in Wittgenstein’s writing. Not all our activities are defined by being governed by rules – rather, to follow a rule is part of our practices, and connected to their background.
