This volume documents the history of the discovery of ancient Veleia (Duchy of Parma), using the documentation of the excavations and the finds at Veleia of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Caylus's involvement is of special interest. He seized the opportunity to apply his methods of archaeological study there between 1760 and 1765, thanks also to his relationship with his friend Paciaudi, director of the excavations at Veleia and of the Museum of Parma. The volume, and especially its first part, dwells on features of the personality of Caylus as an archaeologist.
