The inter-war period of the 20th century was a time when sport was just beginning to enter the context of public life, politics and business. Latvia’s decision to break off all sporting links with Lithuania in the wake of the 1939 European Basketball Championship can be viewed as an unusual decision for that time period. The aim of this article is to understand the context in which this decision was taken, reconstruct the fateful game itself and set out the actual and formal reasons for this radical decision.

L’entre-deux-guerres fut une période du XXe siècle où le sport commença précisément à s’inscrire dans le contexte de la vie publique, politique et commerciale. La décision prise par la Lettonie de rompre tous ses liens sportifs avec la Lituanie dans le sillage du Championnat européen de basketball peut donc être perçue comme inhabituelle pour l’époque. Le but de cet article est de déterminer les circonstances dans lesquelles cette décision fut prise, de reconstituer l’atmosphère du match fatidique l’ayant déclenchée et d’en exposer les causes officielles et réelles.
