Louis Massignon, in his monumental survey of Hallâj’s work and spirituality, has analyzed in detail the pamphlet entitled Kitâb al-Tawâsîn. An aspect of this work however warrants further clarification: the act that Hallâj in witnessing the unity of God and man (“I am the true God, anâ al-Haqq”) is explicitly referring to prophet Muhammad’s experience. Hallâj presents his own mission as an imitation of Muhammad’s spiritual mission. He further claims that it is possible for anyone who genuinely has the desire to gain access to the only authentic unity ( tawhîd): man’s self-abolition in the perfect human model – namely the prophetic model.
