Confronted with today’s migrations it is necessary to review the concept of diaspora in order to construct a sociological approach to dispersion and mobility of people. Among the different criteria for defining diaspora, we need to look further than the spatial dimension in order to understand all the various aspects of the social and historical experiences that are covered by this term and which give it complete meaning. The Jewish Diaspora provides a paradigm, with its experience spanning positive realities and imagined territories. Similarly, new diasporas all around the world are developing a great variety of forms of integration. Diaspora signifies more and more “cultural spread.” Diasporic persons are actors of their own story: while trying to give a meaning to their exile, they invent and create relationships to others.
