At the very end of the 19th century, tsarist Russia obtains from China the right to make its Transsiberian railroad go through a concession in Manchuria. Too far removed from their European grounds, the Russian engineers decide to hire Chinese coolies to build this railway. The relationships that arise around this manchurian nexus question both migration studies and imperial history in the context of a renewed sanitary treatment of epidemics.
