As an engineer and Sardinian Army officer in the service of Tsar Alexander I, Alexandre Michaud was a complex historical actor in his function as a strategist in the Russian campaign and informal diplomat in the Congress period. As adviser of the Tsar, and indirect protector of Piedmont, it was Michaud who Alexander I sent to pope Leo XII in 1825 in order to negotiate a reunification of the Eastern and Western Churches. Thus, the study of his life allows us to track the life of a national hero who eventually became a hero of novels.
