The origins of a privileged partnership: France and Saudi Arabia, 1956-1968

Today, Saudi Arabia is France’s primary commercial partner in the Gulf, as well as its first client for armaments. This situation has emerged from a bilateral relation which has been building for over 60 years. As old as the fifth Republic, the aim of this article is to attempt to shed light on the pillars that have paved the way for Franco-Saudi partnership. Starting with the critical situation of 1956, we will focus on this major decade when French policy in Saudi Arabia reinvented itself.
