Rather than diminishing archaeological fieldwork, the First World War furthered it. A twofold scientific battlefield developed, expanding across spaces with the support of armed forces. The Austrian scientists focused on occupied territories in the Balkans, while the French moved from the Dardanelles to Macedonia. In both cases, archaeology was a means used to establish a predominance based on first-hand knowledge of the past. Archaeologists assumed a more operational role within the army on the French side, paving the way for increased diplomatic presence in the interwar period.
