The cultural history of the French colonization allows us to analyse the process of independence in Indochina with a different perspective. By using new archives it appears that sports and scouting activities could play a part in the building of a local identity and could fuel the spread of modern nationalism. Young members of the “Éclaireurs” movement discovered their local heroes and tried to mimic them by fighting France because many youth leaders were indigenous and nationalists.
