Smoking, between Auto-erotism and Breathing

"Beyond the toxic nicotine dependency that tobacco detoxification helps overcome, we can observe another form of cigarette dependency, a remainder leading patients to staying attached to cigarettes despite all treatments or alternatives available. The matter is then to understand the modalities that bind the smoker to his object in a way that makes him dependent, as well as the forms that array the above dependency to nicotine. The reading of J.-L. Tristani’s work : „Le stade respir“(the breathing stage) which illustrates the symptoms of a famous tobacco addict, S. Freud, enlightens precious elements concerning the body pleasure that cigarettes can procure. Through a clinical example, we will then try to define what these dependency stakes are and what place this product can occupy in the patient’s psychical economy, a place that is inevitably linked to the patient’s singularity and subjective position, but whose details can also echo our other smoking patients, enabling us to re-question the smoking matter."
