People should be able to remember the child they used to be in order to leave him/her gradually. People have to remember in order to grow up . . . This is the psychotherapeutic approach the authors suggest to their teenage patients, who are caught between a childhood they miss and have to leave behind with nostalgia, and a dreaded adulthood they have to tame with curiosity but also fear. What losses does a teenager face? How does remembering occur in the therapeutic process in this in-between age? Does it help the teenager give up what is required? How does the institution create the necessary conditions? How can it help the reunion with childhood objects? How can memory help to give up past infantile positions and support the grieving process?
