Grieving a Diagnosis: An Unstable Identity

During a joint consultation in a children’s hospital, a psychologist and a pediatrician encounter a family in which an adolescent, diagnosed at birth with a rare genetic disorder, has had this diagnosis invalidated under pediatric care. From this clinical experience, the authors offer a mirrored perspective that emphasizes the similarity between the trauma of a diagnosis and of the news that the diagnosis is invalid.
