The multitude of losses that characterize aging has created a deficit-based image of the elderly. The psychological repercussions have an impact on both the individual and the family system. The issue of castration resurfaces and identity is redefined on the basis of mourning and giving up. While institutionalization highlights these losses and the narcissistic damages they inflict, the institution may also prove to be the place for new investments in social and cultural activities and relationships.
