The contemporary focus on ethnic identity is objectified from the point of view of beliefs and etiological theories, and the analysis of techniques for care. The risk is the promotion of ethnic fundamentalism, which will inevitably lead to losing sight of the “subject in exile” as soon as an attempt is made to generalize and validate these anthropological objects (beliefs and etiological models) into a psychotherapeutic technique essential to caring for the exiled. By relying on the clinical analysis of transmission in exile, we shall attempt to show how the symptom (shown by certain migrants when they symbolically have to declare themselves to be transcending place and time) brings together heterogeneous and mixed references, which highlight each individual within their filiations. The role of clinical listening in a health facility is also explained.
