Perverse Potential in Adolescence

When dealing with adolescents, one frequently comes across seemingly perverse behaviors that may lead the therapist to conclude that there is an established perversion. In this paper, we start a critical discussion, considering that in some cases there is no perversion as such, but rather seemingly perverse defense mechanisms, which some adolescents clad themselves with. These adolescents are “narcissically weak” and try therewith to face the traumatic fracture of puberty. Indeed it seems most important to both therapist and adolescent, during the treatment, that a clear distinction should be made between a well-structured organization on a psychopathological level, and a defense mechanism, often transitory, with no lasting consequences. Here, the very dynamic of the treatment is at stake.
