What is handed down to children from their parents’ migration can lead adolescents to a self-inflicted “exile,” because they are caught between the maternal’s mourning, which cannot be elaborated, and a social impossibility. This exile may translate either to a symptomatic behavior, or to a process of creation (when the adolescent can transform the grief into an opening). Through clinical experiences with young people whose parents have migrated, we will try to offer some insight as to what is “going on.”
