Characterizing homosexuality may seem an obvious issue at first sight, but it is not so if we admit that (1) anatomy alone does not determine which gender a subject will identify with; (2) the object of their desire gives them some identity, albeit they will not, in most cases, accept to remain confined to it. It may thus be inferred that homosexuality does not exist, but rather that there are various homosexualities, testifying to a combination of subjective positionings with regard to gender differences and the choice of the object of one’s desire. Another standpoint is left to the subject: the position that they have to take regarding who they say they are. In other words, our question should be: how does a subject cope with the homosexual “identity” they believe they have to assume, and to what extent?
