Gérard Blanchard’s essay La Bande dessinée. Histoire des histoires en images de la préhistoire à nos jours, published in 1969, attributed the origin of the “ninth art” to cave art. The consequence of this hypothesis was to dilute the specificity of a modern media into a multimillenial tradition—a “story in images” of all sorts and on all surfaces. Half a century later the issue of the origin of comics is still controversial. Referring to “storytelling” and “sequence” does not provide a clear-cut answer, although the accomplishment of Rodolphe Töpffer in the nineteenth century still has an undeniable seminal influence.
