Debating images: Toward a new pragmatics of cinema and the audiovisual

How do members of the audience grasp films and audiovisual materials and—as members of an open forum—discuss images and sounds? Understanding this “deliberation of images” involves a more general approach to the relationship between rhetoric and images and the broader ability of members of the audience to discuss the images they read as arguments and points of view. This discussion relates to social and political issues and also to their ability to allow—or not—new combinations versus standard expectations (e.g. audiovisual genres), even questioning the very image and imitation. Places and levels of deliberation lead us to a better understanding of the relationship between deliberation, reception, and the production of forms.
