Genette, a counter-investigation: Pragmatics, forms, and diachrony in the “narrative voice”

Gérard Genette devised a number of notions that can be seen as the norm in textual analysis today. But it is too easy to forget the theoretical choices and frameworks that led to the development of these categories. To assess the importance of opening the black box of Genettian categories, the author uses the example of “narrative voice” in Figures III and tries to assess to what extent the notion of “homo-intradiegetic narrative” can really be applied to the case of Odysseus and the Phaeacians. In the form of a counter-investigation, the analysis sheds light on the problem of the link between formal analysis and diachrony. In lieu of an approach that simply uses Genettian textual categories by changing the context of their application, the author favors a more pragmatic approach and a use of forms that historicizes and gives meaning to formal experimentation, while deepening the conceptualization at play in Genette’s works.
