Singing in animal communication

In some zoological groups, acoustic communication is particularly elaborate and complex. It involves flexible vocal signals learned through experience, especially social experience. Such modes of communication are observed in certain species of birds, bats, elephants and cetaceans. These animals perform vocalizations whose structural and temporal organization is often very complex, quite reminiscent of songs. The importance of the cultural transmission of these songs makes it possible to assign them major roles in the social life of individuals.
