Uncertainties, doubts, risks, and probabilities all give rise to anxious calculations; they interfere with the human desire for certainty, security, and assurance. These situations are linked to a fundamental human concern for ourselves, for those closest to us, and for those we do not consider as such. These situations call for responsible decision-making. This article explores Aquinas’ treatment of uncertainty in relation to prudence, in order to shed light on its heuristic relevance for understanding current decision-making processes.
