The author of this paper draws on her experience as a psychoanalyst within the French analytical community to examine the androcentrism and domination of one sex over the other which have leached into the theory and contemporary history of the psychoanalytical movement in France. We will reinstate these questions as part of the controversy concerning the question of what it is to be female, an issue which has divided the psychoanalytical community over the last century.
