The carer of today

In the nineteenth century, medicine sought to attain the rank of science and gradually move from a belief-based practice to a knowledge-based practice. However, it is quite often overlooked that this meant that the patient’s voice was left to one side. The remarkable efficiency of tackling illness, gained over time, has thus led to the abandonment of the patient and the singular way that he or she has to go through what he or she has to go through. However, today, we are witnessing a change in which patients in need of care expect a dual excellence, that of the actions taken and the attention paid to them. They remind us that under all circumstances, the patient is not defined by the disease he or she has.
