Compared to all the other organs of the human body, the eye is unique, owing to its specific anatomical and immunological features. These immunological features provide an efficient, well-regulated defense system, which fully and constantly preserves the morphological and functional integrity of the eye. The characteristics used to achieve this are known as the “immunological privilege of the eye,” which refers to a set of local and systemic anatomical, cellular, humoral, and cytokinic factors, which act together in a process that combines complexity with perfect harmony in time and space. This article offers a simplified look at the ocular immunological privilege, as well as its practical correlations with the pathophysiology of uveitis.
