“Ukraine’s pain is Europe’s shame.” The European Parliament and the Ukrainian Crisis

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2015. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : The Euromaïdan demonstrations were widely reported in the media, and they were also very largely discussed inside the European Parliament. Five debates were organised on the events in Ukraine from December 2013 to April 2014, in which the MEPs took the stand to call for a strong European policy and criticizing Russia’s actions. This chapter analyses the contents of these parliamentary debates in order to identify the themes present, as well as the political or geographical cleavages that may exist across the Chamber. The study of such parliamentary debates upholds Ukraine’s European identity and the specific interest that MEPs hold in the Ukrainian crisis. The Chamber is used as a public forum by its members who promote the moral values of the EU. And the Ukrainian crisis becomes an issue of identity for Europe as a whole, forced to defend the legitimacy of its values in the face of the Russian intervention.
