Prototypical autism: The essential dialogue between clinical practice and research

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2025. Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : Since its earlier descriptions, the concept of autism has undergone numerous evolutions and is now largely replaced by the term autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a broad and heterogeneous category defined by imprecise clinical criteria, raising numerous practical and scientific challenges. Mottron advocates for the recognition of an early, homogeneous, and universal prototype, whose validation could serve as a foundation for redefining autism. This approach fosters a reciprocal dialogue between clinical practice and research, initially aiming to precisely delineate the core characteristics of the autistic prototype. Subsequently, it seeks to identify what distinguishes it from other neurodevelopmental and psychopathological conditions, validate and elucidate the frequent presence of associated disorders, differentiate potential complications or late-onset developments, and, ultimately, acknowledge everyone’s unique trajectory.
